Joseph (Joe) Dominic Veroni
Joe was born in New York City but moved to Guelph at an early age. All you have to do is go back through old newspapers to see the effect this man had on sports in the city.
He was the Ontario champion in wrestling as a young man, but also boxed, raced cars, played football, baseball and hockey. But it was his work as a trainer and builder with Guelph’s Junior hockey teams that made him famous. Some of his home remedies for various aches and pains are still talked about. Even if they had been invented back then, there was no need for an ultrasound machine in his dressing room.
Joe wasn’t much for the spotlight, but worked tirelessly bettering the youth in the community.
There were many “Joe Veroni Nights” held at Guelph Memorial Gardens to pay tribute to one
of the City’s finest citizens.
Inducted into the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame – April 7, 1994
