Portrait by Robert Howson

Born in Guelph in 1956, Rachelle quickly established herself as an outstanding runner while attending Bishop Macdonell high school. By the age of 18, she was a member of Canada’s National Track and Field team, setting a World Record for 600 metres indoors. She was also the Junior Canadian champion in the 400m and 800m.

A year later she won a Gold Medal while setting a Canadian record in the 4x400m relay and set OFSSA (Ontario High School Records) in the 200-metre and 400-metre. While at the Junior  Olympics in 1975 Rachelle won a Gold in the 400-metre and a Silver in the 800-metre. Rachelle reached the pinnacle of her career when she competed for Canada in the 1976 Summer Olympics in the 4x400m relay. She and teammates Margaret Stride, Yvonne Saunders and Joyce Yakubowich made it to the final, finishing 8th.

She semi-retired in 1977, but came back in 1978 to a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in the relay. Rachelle still resides in Guelph with her husband Bill, and their three children.
